A Mentoring Relationship to Support the Introduction of the Nurse Practitioner Role in Japan
Published 07/2023
Mentoring in Nursing through Narrative Stories Across the World, 431 - 439
An international mentoring relationship was established with a focus on Nurse Practitioner role development in Japan. Comparing the roles of NPs in Australia, Japan has barriers to the introduction of the NP role posed by national laws. The relationship included the cultivation and honing of skills in policy analysis and role development. The mentoring relationship is discussed and bought to life through dynamics of dialogue. Yrjö Engeström’s activity theory in 1999 was used as a framework of the dialog. The mentoring relationship was structured through the aim of producing publications for peer review. In effect, the ideas emerged through the process of discussion, research, and writing. The papers “Controlling Medicalization and Nurse Practitioner Roles” in 2018, and “A Policy Analysis of the ‘Specific Procedure Training Course System: A Challenge for Professional Lifelong Learning’” in 2020 arose in the context of the mentoring relationship.
